Skill and sensitivity pertinent to the human side of leadership pervades explorer Earnest Shackletons heroic efforts to save his shipwrecked crew President Abraham Lincolns wisdom as he led the Union during the U.S. Civil War abolitionist Fredrick Douglass campaign against slavery and other racist oppressions clergyman Dietrich Bonhoeffers effective resistance to the Nazis during World War II and activist Rachel Carsons writing, publicity efforts, and speaking - which helped launch and propel the environmental movement in the 1960s.I was struck by three lessons during my conversation with Nancy on the FRICTION podcast. The first is how she defined the word leader given her focus on courage and effectiveness. Nancy turned to a surprising source The late novelist David Foster Wallace (best known as the author of Infinite Jest). In a Rolling Stone article that Wallace wrote in 2000 about John McCains presid ential campaign, he pointed out the word leader is a boring a cliche - our eyes glaze over when we hear the term. Wallace added, however, that real leaders arent boring at all, because they help us overcome the limitations of our own individual laziness and selfishness and weakness and fear and get us to do better, harder things than we can get ourselves to do on our own. Those are the kind of leaders that Forged in Crisis is about - they overcome friction, frustration, and fatigue by somehow inducing their followers (and themselves too) to become more resolute, stronger, and smarter rather than to flee, flounder, and lose hope.That kind of leadership, for example, is evident in the many ways that Fredrick Douglass rallied support against slavery, gave hope to the enslaved, and provided direct assistance to escaped slaves who sought freedom. Douglass gave compelling speeches that inspired and recruited abolitionists he published the North Star, a weekly serial that included antisl avery speeches, news from recent abolitionist meetings, and editorials and he helped fugitive slaves who escaped via the Underground Railroad. Douglas and his wife Anna offered food, clothing, lodging, and advice to weary fugitives who arrived on the doorstep of his home and office in Rochester, New York. By battling slavery and mobilizing others in so many large and small ways, Douglass pushed and persuaded abolitionists and slaves to overcome their limitations and do better, harder things.Second, a hallmark of those courageous leaders is that each suffered through stretches where they stepped back, felt defeated, or descended into a state of despair (and in some cases, like Lincoln, probably suffered episodes of clinical depression). Nancy emphasizes that even the best leaders suffer through stretches of self-doubt and exhaustion. Along the way, however, they come to understand how to dampen their flaws and accentuate their strengths - in part, by finding and working with others who can fill the leadership gaps they create, restore their flagging spirits, compensate for their weaknesses, and accentuate their strengths.In the cold opening to the podcast, I ask Nancy, If you had a magic wand and could change things about modern leaders, what would you pick? She answers Pry them open and make them come face-to-face with their own vulnerability. As Ive written elsewhere, developing such self-awareness depends on people who will tell you the truth about your missteps and blind spots - and you can listen to and learn from. To paraphrase, Nancy says, otherwise, it is like sailing the ocean without acknowledging there will be large waves and strong headwinds. That is why the courageous leaders she studied each, in some way or another, realized they couldnt succeed alone, that they had to get beyond their narcissistic selves and go from I to thou. They each recruited similarly unselfish helpers, followers, and fellow leaders. For Lincoln, this included recruiting and fomenting healthy conflict within the team of rivals in his cabinet. For Rachel Carson, this meant relying on a diverse collection of scientists, biologists, fisherman, editors, publishers, journalists, and politicians who helped her write Silent Spring and launch the modern environmental movement. As Nancy suggests, none of the heroic leaders she studied were solo supermen. Each was adept and mobilizing and motivating others to join and bolster a common cause. The digester will process 240 tons of manure per day from the dairys 8,500 cows, generating biogas burned as fuel in power production and a pathogen-free and nutrient-rich digestate that will be used as an organic fertilizer. The digester was built through a partnership between the University of Wisconsin and BIOFerm Energy Systems, a teilen of the German company Viessmann Group.Although the technology basics of anaerobic digesters are the same, components can vary according to project parameters, including project size, typ e of bacteria, temperature, feedstock type, and volume of production. It really answers the question of what motivates us to work. What was the thesis behind that book?Barry Theres an ideology in American society - in fruchtwein industrial societies - that we work for pay. As long as people are paid adequately, what you have them do doesnt matter. Then you can just organize work in the most efficient way possible.This has been governing the development of industrial production for two hundred and fifty years. I think its false. So I wrote the book to try to indicate that getting paid is just one small part of why people work. They want to be engaged, they want to be challenged, they want autonomy, they want to be able to make their own decisions about how to spend their time, they want to be engaged with other people, and they want to be doing something that they think makes a difference. All these things matter, but if you create a workplace where none of these things are available, then indeed you will be creating people who just work for pay.Theres a lot of evidence out there that when you have enlightened workplaces, people do better work. Nonetheless, the overwhelming majority of people around the world are either unengaged or actively disengaged from the work that they do. So were having a big negative impact on the quality of peoples lives, and were also leaving money on the table, because were not getting the most engaged and productive work we could.Ryan Leaders of organizations often say Hey, we need to bring together some of our brightest minds within this company to come up with a great new idea in brainstorming sessions. Im curious about how we can potentially improve our filters for this, because some of the items will be truly valuable and relevant, and some will not. And also minimize second-guessing if they decide not to use someones idea?Barry I think second-guessing in a context like this is a good thing. Were going to be wrong most of the time when were trying to push in a new direction, or imagine what the future demands of us. Evolution provides a good analogy. Evolutionary change is largely driven by genetic mutation. The overwhelming majority of the time, these mutations are not adaptive improvements. Theyre a failure- so most genetic mutations lead to death. But when they work, we evolve. The mantra in Silicon Valley is to fail fast- they dont mind if people fail, they j ust dont want to invest a huge amount of time and resources in innovations that end up being useless.If you are trying to see into the future, you just have to expect that most of the time, what you see wont actually appear. Its not a waste to brainstorm and come up with ideas that dont work. The things you reject influence the direction that you take with the things that you accept.I also think that its a schwimmbad idea in general to sit down with your people and say, Now we have to come up with something new. I would much rather have organizations asking what the world actually needs, and then figuring out how to provide it. What made Google such an extraordinary achievement is that they diagnosed a real problem, and then they solved it. And they solved it in a way that was far better than anyone could ever have dreamt possible. If you sit down with your organization and ask yourself, What does the world need, and how can we provide it?, even the failures are worth pursuing.RyanW hat do you think is the future of work?Kevin Kelly, and other futurists that Ive spoken with, have stated that the world will be full of contractors, meaning that individuals will work for six different companies at the exact same time. What are your thoughts on that?BarryWell, who knows? That seems to be possible, and the question is, Is this good or bad? Whats good about it is that people really get to pick and choose what kind of work they do, and who they do it for. Whats bad is that it creates people as isolated islands.There is no community that theyre a part of.We get a lot of our community connection from the people we work with, and if youre a contractor, the people you work with today and the people you work with tomorrow are going to be different people.There are a lot of people at this transitional moment who increasingly are able to work from home- they save the commute, they can work in their pajamas, there are lots of things about it that are fantastic. But what happe ns after a while they discover that they feel isolated- they miss the social content.Now, as Ivesaid before in connection with modern media, people adapt.
