The Dos and Donts of Candidate Experience

The Dos and Donts of Candidate Experience With most candidates being rejected in any given  recruiting  process, plenty of people will have things to say about your company good, bad and sometimes ugly. One way to improve what is being said, is to focus on the candidate experience. Ive chatted with Kevin Grossman of the Talent Board  to get some details. Have a listen below, keep reading for a transcript and be sure to subscribe to the Employer Branding Podcast. What is the definition of candidate experience? A lot of people have said a lot of things about candidate experience, also pretending that its important but not as important as its played out to be, but it really truly is though. So, from our perspective, candidate experience is about every single touch point, any touch point, any time throughout the recruiting process, which a lot of the time loops back on itself. Whether its on researching a job and dont apply or do apply, make it to interview or get disposition immediately, it affects everything that we do. And our whole thing is that were all perpetual candidates all the time. So we dont discriminate, at least from a mission and research perspective, the difference between an applicant and a candidate. Were just all candidates, period. What are the dos and donts of candidate experience? Referrals are bigger than theyve ever been, not just for companies, which its always been an important part of the hiring process for recruiting teams big and small. But now, candidates are leaning on their networks even more than theyve ever had before. In fact, thats gone up about 14% from 2015. Thats a big jump for candidates. You know, weve been harping on each other for years now to build and leverage our networks. Well, candidates seem to be doing that more. Communication feedback loops,  this continues to trend this way every year and its not unique again this year. Companies that are investing more in better automated and human communications, because obviously early on in the process, theres a lot more automated messages that go out, particularly when theyre dispositioned. But when theres more thought process put into that strategy, when theres more touching of candidates throughout. Also not providing feedback, which I know varies what you can and want to say around the world, the United States is heavy on the compliance side, so you have to be careful what you tell candidates of why theyre not moving on. But just giving them something thats, what I like to call, specifically ambiguous which is always a big hit at our workshops and then asking for feedback, thats a big difference right there. Candidates that have an overall 5-star experience on a Likert scale of 1 to 5 meaning pretty darn good overall and most of whom again didnt move on or get the job, theyre getting asked 30% of the time for feedback, which is really, really huge, except those on the other end of that, they have a 1-star report, overall candidate experience, 88% of them arent being asked for any feedback at all. Huge missed opportunity there. The number-one pitfall is to not do anything. We do workshops and educational webinars and things all throughout the year, and one of the things I hear again and again is, you know, Gosh, I cant touch everybody. I cant make everybody happy. You know, even we try to bring closer everybody, its hard to do. Well, it is a big task, but as much as you can do it and as much as you would invest and being consistent about it, and making sure that expectation setting is clear and communication is clear. And even asking for feedback while you can, not just for new hires, it goes a long way with fairness with candidates. Thats really all we want. Were gutted that we dont get the job, but if you are clear with me and you treated me fairly and then you said, you know, Sorry, were not going to pursue any further, I get it. Its the way it works and thats what makes a difference. How can we measure ROI  on candidate experience? Right now, after 6 years of doing this research globally, we can show that candidates that have an overall 5-star experience, most of them again didnt get the job at the end of the day. But through our research, they, 64% of the time, are willing to increase the business relationship with that company that they applied to. Now, that means apply again, it means buy stuff if youre a consumer-based business, and then it means refer, which is the big one. So thats a huge potential increase to the bottom line over time. And there are companies today ATT, many others that especially are really working hard to try to quantify what that is, because it will vary from company to company and industry to industry, but you know, it could be into the millions of dollars. Like theres an example with Virgin Media that its a pretty well-touted case study now that they actually did the quantification, and it was millions of dollars in lost revenue, consumer-based loss revenue, based on a poor candidate experience. These are companies that participate in our research are doing the same things today, and well be able to have more of that research out there. Resume For an Interior DesignerAn effective and helpful resume will show your talents as an interior designer. It should be created in such a way that it provides your designer company with enough information to decide whether you are a good candidate for the job or not. An interior designer resume will include a description of your qualifications, work experience, educational background, references and other information that can help the company choose you or not.If you are a great designer, an employer will surely want to interview you. But if you are not one yet, they may not be so sure that you are suitable to the job. They might just choose another designer. Making The Perfect Job Application

Making The Perfect Job Application The part of the job-hunting process that many career-seekers have the most trouble with is the earliest stage of all: the job application. Consisting mostly of the resume, it can feel like a tall order to effectively describe yourself as a candidate worth looking into, but it’s important to get this stage right. Even if you’re a fantastic interviewer, you have trouble getting in your element if you have trouble making great applications. Here, we’re going to look at a few tips that can help you make a real impact with those applications. Don’t write one resume for all applications In a perfect world, your resume would do what you expect it to: sum up your experiences and skills so that you can hand it out to employer after employer. However, the truth is that you’re better off optimizing it for each and every application. Company research is important for helping you understand the work culture and what they value in employees, but you should pay most attention to the job description in the advertisement and highlight which of your skills and experiences make you fit the best potential candidate that they’re looking for. Start off on a solid basis If you haven’t made an application in a long time then you might not remember what, exactly, a good resume looks like. There are no hard and fast rules, meaning you have some room in terms of format, but you want to make sure that its well-structured to put the most relevant information first and to improve its readability. For that reason, you should take a closer look at some of the resume templates out there. It can help you get the professional appearance for your resume and show you how you should weight different sections, but you still need to replace the writing with your own, of course. There are different templates out there, too, so it’s all about choosing whichever one gives you the right professional appeal for the company you’re applying to. Quantify what achievements you can When it comes to listing how you have excelled in roles and responsibilities in your past, it’s easy to simply say that you achieved or improved something. However, it’s a lot more impressive if you can add a specific value to it. For instance, if you increased social media engagement for a past brand by 20% over a year, then the number will stand out and add plenty of credibility to the statement. Of course, it’s wise to ensure any quantities you include are accurate and even better if your chosen references are able to back them up if asked. You should be prepared to extrapolate on any such quantified achievements during the interview if you get that far, too. Don’t neglect your soft skills When it comes to applying for a position, you are naturally going to spend a lot of time focusing on the skills and qualifications that ensure that you fit the duties that will be expected of you. In certain technical positions, those hard skills will carry the majority of the weight. However, don’t miss and opportunity to flex highly sought-after transferable skills of the soft variety, either. If you’re able to demonstrate things like punctuality, great communication, research skills, and time management, this can be just as much of a selling point that can win you an interview. Make some room for soft skills, no matter how technically demanding a job is. Get meticulous Common, even trivial errors sink a lot more resumes than you might think. Some employers may be willing to overlook a few mistakes here and there, but it doesn’t give the kind of professional appearance that you want, overall. Before you send off any resume, make sure that you pore over it closely for any mistakes that you’re able to correct. There are writing improvement sites and apps that can help highlight those issues that you might miss on your own as well. You don’t have to spend all day agonizing over the spelling and grammar of your application, but you should at least give it a quick once over and a re-read before you let it represent you professionally. If you want the greatest application possible, then you have to work to make sure its best suited to whomever you’re applying to and do what you can to polish it. Just make sure you use the apps and templates out there that can help you get your resumes turned out at a much more efficient rate.

Personal Branding Weekly - Happy Birthday Edition - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Personal Branding Weekly - Happy Birthday Edition - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Yesterday, I celebrated my birthday. I enjoyed the time with family and friends. And, also used the moment to reflect on what worked last year and what I’m looking forward to in the coming year. Along with all the usual Groundhog Day happenings, the excitement of Super Bowl was a new twist for the day along with the sad news of the passing of the actor, Philip Seymour Hoffman. All of those events brought me to my question for the week â€" are you moving forward with your brand? Stand still? There’s no standing still with your brand.  [tweet this] But, like the movie Groundhog Day, there are those whose brand is “running in circles” with every day repeating the day before.      1. Do you know where you’ve come from and how much you’ve advanced in your brand? Do you have a plan on how you would like to move forward? Do you know the next step on the road to success with your brand? Know your brand advocates? In sports, who your fans and super fans are pretty clear cut. If only it was that way for personal brands or even small business brands.      2. Have you identified your brand advocates? Do you have a system and plan to stay connect and in relationship with them? If it all ended today? What would be left undone if it all ended today?   Make a list.      3. Are any of those items on your list right now? Are they a part of your goals and objectives? Three simple questions. Yet, they are often easier said than done.   Good luck! Our hope is this week’s articles, are also of help to you as you discover, communicate and evaluate your personal brand. 3 Important Tips I Received When I Started My Writing Career CareerMetis.com

3 Important Tips I Received When I Started My Writing Career â€" CareerMetis.com Probably everyone who starts writing wants to do it well: otherwise, why even bother? However, it’s nearly impossible to start your writing career like a pro if you have no prior experience. Mistakes have to be made and lessons have to be learned.evalHowever, this doesn’t mean that you are going to have the toughest start possible: it’ll be easier for you if you prepare well, do your research and learn what can help you become a successful writer. When I started my writing career, I did my research well. I also questioned other writers a lot to make sure that writing is really my thing and to prepare myself for what is going to come.I received many useful tips back then, but if I’d have to pick only three of them, I’d choose the following ones:1) Always write Detailed PlansevalIt doesn’t matter if you are a criminal novelist or a blogger writing for fashion magazines: a plan is still necessary. It helps you to avoid getting stuck in a middle of a writing process: actually, i t’s quite hard to get stuck if you know exactly what you’re going to write next. Moreover, a plan can help you understand whether the whole idea of your writing piece is well-thought or not.If you write a novel, you need to be sure that every plot twist is revealed by an end of a story.evalIf you write an article, you probably would like to ensure that you’ll cover all the important parts and mention all the necessary details. That’s what plans are good for.Of course, it’s impossible to come up with an amazing plan right away. The bigger your piece of writing is, the larger and detailed a plan has to be. So if you want to write something really huge and stunning, take some time to think about a plan well.Spend a day or two writing it, then come back to it to re-read and rewrite it, fixing all the things that seem strange to you.Show your plan to your friends, ask their opinion and maybe change something they consider strange. That’s how a good plan is born.2) Read A Lotev alYes, you’ve probably heard that tip before, but this doesn’t mean it’s less important.Actually, it is one of the most important tips, as it’s impossible to develop a good writing style without reading tons of good literature. While a writer has to remain original, they also need to seek inspiration in someone else’s works.Read a lot of books if you want to become a novelist.Read a lot of blogs and articles if you want to become a blogger.Notice the differences between writing genres and try to understand why these genres are different.Remember some things that you like in someone else’s writing and try to use them in your own way, be it metaphors or plot twists. Of course, don’t copy blindly: this won’t do you any good.3) Show off Your WorkA writer needs to learn and it’s hard to do without an audience. You need to find people that will help you make your writing better: they will point to mistakes, on bad metaphors, on things you forget to mention, and so on.You can find such people among your friends or start publishing your writing somewhere online. The only important thing here is to learn how to accept their criticism well.It can be painful for a writer to realize that their writing looks bad. However, you have to embrace the fact that writing is a process and that you are still learning.evalMaybe something in your writing seems off now, but as time passes, it’ll change. So try to listen to what critics say and keep searching for ways to improve your work.I hope these tips will be useful to you. Good luck!

How can Google+ help with your job hunt -

How can Google+ help with your job hunt - Have you been trying out Google+ for your job hunt? It promises to be an important addition to social networking strategies for job seekers, and its important to try to keep on top of opportunities to engage and grow your communities and to learn new information via online tools. I believe there are three big reasons to use social media: To expand the number of people you know and who know you. To learn new information pertinent to your field from mentors and thought leaders, and To illustrate your expertise with a community of people who may connect you to opportunities based on learning about you and what you know. Google+ allows users to accomplish all of these goals in similar ways to other networks, such as Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn; it very easy to open up pathways to connect with people youve never met and to engage in an in-depth conversation. This engagement compares, in many ways, to Twitter, where it is possible to connect, meet, and learn from people you dont already know, without barriers requiring introductions. Google+s value add is the fact that Google controls much of search traffic. Any tie to being found online and any boost Google+ may provide gives this new network extra value. Read my post on Job-Hunt.org for tips to use Google+s features, including your Google profile, circles, sparks and hangouts. Stay tuned for information about the Career+ Chat, sponsored via the Career Collective (and friends).
